Are you a lip balm addict, like me?
With this simple DIY recipe, you can make a year’s stash in just a few minutes and for less than a dollar each! These make great little holiday or thank-you gifts too so make a bunch and spread some lip balm joy!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Lip Balm tubes. I buy mine on Amazon but in a pinch you could even reuse your old ones by boiling them. You could also use little round stainless or plastic tins.
- Beeswax pellets
- Cocoa butter
- Coconut oil
- Peppermint Essential Oil
Measurements (for 6 tubes):
- 1 Tbsp packed of cocoa butter
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- 1 Tbsp beeswax pellets
- 5 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Step 1: MELT
Get out a small saucepan and add a couple inches of water and set to boil. Once boiling, set to low.
Meanwhile, add the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and beeswax to a small glass or ceramic container, ideally with a spout for pouring. I used a ceramic creamer pitcher.
Set your container in the hot water to make a water bath melt your ingredients. You can use a butter knife or spoon to stir to help break down the beeswax pellets.
Step 2: ADD YOUR ESSENTIAL OIL(S)
After your cocoa butter, coconut oil, and beeswax are all in liquid form, take your container out of the water bath and add 5 drops of peppermint essential oil and stir to mix.
You can of course experiment with mixing and matching oils as well (I’m going to try orange AND peppermint with this recipe next time!).
Step 3: POUR
Now you are ready to fill your lip balm tubes. I’ve found it helpful to bind all the tubes together with a rubber band so they don’t topple over!
Carefully pour. Don’t take too long though because the mixture will harden right away and clog your spout. This is why I don’t recommend using a dropper or a funnel for this step. Trust me, it won’t work (yep, I’ve tried!).
Let your lip balm cool (without the cap) and top them off again as the balm settles in the tube. Stick in your fridge for a few minutes and then cap.
Step 4: ENJOY!
You can add a label if you want to give your tubes a more professional look. I usually buy Avery labels that you can print using your inkjet printer and Avery’s free online printing software which has customizable templates.
Give as gifts and stash ’em in your purse, gym bag, your desk. You’ll never be without a lip balm again!
